unethical job
I think everybody got a phone call or a message on their cells about winning some fabulous prize, thousands of euros and expensive gadgets. All you have to do is confirm your win with your full name, your Social Security Number (aka CNP) and other insignificant information off your identity card. I’m not writing about those people who not only realize that it is impossible to win once they never entered a competition of some sort and not to mention all the warnings on the news and in the papers about schemes like these you can’t miss hearing about, but who still believe in it as a God given miracle and naively let themselves be fooled. (I heard that the latest thing is that you get a beep and whom ever tries to call or beep back that number is instantly ripped off the credit they had on the phone card).
The point of this awful long introduction is my thought of those people hired to call different people and lying to them in their faces! I mean, what was the add like “looking for people with great persuasion skills, who can convince people to believe a lie, great salary and bonuses for every successful scheme”. Ok maybe that was exaggerated. But even if the add wasn’t this obvious, once you get to the interview and you are told what you have to do, doesn’t it puzzle you that you’ll be breaking the law? Don’t you think that something like this could happen to your friends and family? Why would you agree to take part in such a black business? The only significant answer would be money. They must have a big big salary to make them shut up and do their job right. And imagine the training for such a thing “ok guys, remember, when you call somebody smile and be very joyful when you announce the prize, like they do it on TV at Bingo or teleshopping, must get the customer really psyched and your enthusiasm will convince them! explain how simple it is to get the prize, they just have to tell their name and SSN and come pick up the package at this inexistent address, but make it sound real!”. I wonder what trainer would accept such a job? Teaching how to fool people. Let’s say he’s one of the brains of the whole company, putting his knowledge to work. Let’s get back to the employees. After a brilliant career as a professional schemer they decide to change jobs. They want a meaningful job, they dream of fame and prestige (there’s no way they can brag or be bragged about the job in question). If they apply for a normal job, what would they right in their resume? “customer service”? “telesales”? “public relations”? What would they answer if asked to talk about the main responsibilities of the position occupied had for the part 3 years”. How would a businessman which such a company can give recommendation for one of his employees when he decides to leave? And how did he get legal approval to start this firm in the first place?
This series of questions could go on forever, I think it’s enough to prove my point and my concern. I’m really curious how this things work legally and morally. Talking at one of my courses at school about a company’s culture meaning its values, rules and regulations, would someone join such a devious environment because he actually likes it? Would they not think of the consequences and blindly follow the company’s goal to profit of innocent people just for the fun of it?
It gets the best of my understanding, because at the same course mentioned above I learned the two main concepts used when starting any kind of an organization, the base of any human gathering:
1. all people, in their essence, are good
2. all people want good
I might be a little too harsh and judgmental yet I can’t stop thinking about this issue and ask myself what would I do if I even am in a situation like this.
